But she had caught the eye of many men before, and would even entertain some of them. That is, until she became a mother. And a mother to a daughter gifted with the Force. She wasnโt sure how she knew from the moment of her daughterโs birth, but there was no denying it. So, she gave her the name of the only man that could have possibly been her father; Averross. Kayley Averross.
It was ironic to be raised strictly while also being raised almost entirely in cantinas. The pair had moved around a lot, but Reina was still only skilled at being a cantina worker. So, the daughter spent most of her early years sitting on the floor, behind the bar. But she had learned a lot about life that way. And it certainly shaped her personality.
Kayley became very good at reading people at a young age. So, it was before she hit double digits that she realized why they always moved from planet to planet. One reason was she was different from other kids, both human and non. Her mother hated it when things moved without being touched, and when her daughter suddenly got her way. She would say, but it didnโt seem like a bad thing. Rather, a sad but scary thing.
The other reason was because Reina was sick. They never got a diagnosis, but they knew that she wonโt live much into Kayleyโs teens, if at all. Whenever Reina wasnโt busy with work, she would search the local area for a diagnosis, a cure, treatment, anything.
And when it seemed they would never find any answers for the motherโs health, their search changed to looking for a man. Rael Averross. Kayley was already nine and it was obvious that Reina didnโt have much time left. All she wanted was for her daughter to be with her kin. Even if it meant spending all the credits they have to hire someone to find him.Reina passed away shortly after Kayley turned ten.Rael Averross found Kayley on a small, crime ridden planet when she was twelve. Two years she had spent on her own, and those were two years she refused to talk about. Neither ever talked about why it took so long for him to find her. They each had their own reasons for their secrets.
More cantinas. Rael had tried to clean himself up at first around her, but it quickly became apparent that Kayley was different from other younglings and very comfortable in a cantina. The two had bonded very quickly, and that was before the Force training began.
It hadnโt been intentional to not train the young girl, he just didnโt know. Especially since it was during a time that Rael was distancing himself from the Force. He hadnโt lost his way, but discovered he didnโt agree with the Jedi on everything. Something he did pass on to Jaina once their training began. The Jedi werenโt always right, and the Sith werenโt always wrong.
The Averrossโes found themselves being something between Jedi and Sith. Especially Kayley. As she entered her late teens, she realized she couldnโt call herself a Jedi. And not just for safety reasons. She really was a Gray Jedi. One that walked the line between Light and Dark. Balanced.โYโknow, you never did tell me where you were from,โ Rael interrupted his own lesson. Though at this point, there wasnโt much else to teach Kayley. If the Order was involved, she would already be a Knight if not a Master herself.
โThereโs no answer to that, old man,โ she replied with a smirk. She turned off her saber as she rolled her shoulder, since they were clearly taking a break. โMom moved us around a lot, and by the time I thought to ask where I was born, she was gone.โ
Even though the young woman was at peace with the death of her mother, sadness still touched her eyes whenever she spoke to Reina. But she quickly covered it with a lighthearted joke. โUnless cantinas count as a place to be from.โ A light laugh was shared between the two at the comment.
โWell,โ the man began as he adjusted his robes. โThen youโre from Ringo Vinda now. Just like your Old Man.โ
It was a simple thing, but it brought a smile to Kayleyโs lips. Even if it wasnโt the planet sheโs from, she at least has an answer now. And a reason for the slight accent she had picked up from now.
โEnough chatting,โ she declared as she lit her saber again. โTime for me to get kick your butt.โ
With a loud laugh from Rael, the two went back to trainingโฆ
